Design shines at Dubai Lynx

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The shortlist for the design categories in this year’s Dubai Lynx awards has been announced, with a greater representation from brand agencies than in previous years.

Design is one of eight categories at the Lynx Awards, the Middle East and north Africa partner event to the Cannes Lions. Although the design category only saw a small increase in entries, from 134 to 139, the number of entries overall was up by 9% to 2,473. The entries came from twelve different countries, including Iraq, Pakistan, the UAE and the UK. Commenting on the entries, Dubai Lynx festival director, Emma Farmer, says “The record number was a reflection of how much the region’s industry had developed and excelled in recent years. Their performance on the global stage at Cannes Lions over the last few years had proved that MENA is now a market to watch in the creative arena.”

Last year’s design jury failed to award a grand prix. This year the jury is chaired by Ije Nwokorie, global CEO of Wolff Olins, and the chair of the design jury of the 2014 Cannes Lions. Nwokorie commented on the paucity of brand agencies shortlisted in Cannes, “You can tell this isn’t their world, and even when they have submitted they just haven’t given us the materials that we would need.” It would appear, however, that many in MENA have paid heed to his words, as this year sees an increase in the number of brand design agencies shortlisted, with Brand Union, StartJG, Wolff Olins and Fitch all included.

The results will be announced this Wednesday, March 11, at the end of the annual Lynx International Festival of Creativity.

The shortlist is as follows.
