Pentawards 2021 winners announced
Packaging awards programme, Pentawards, announced its 2021 winners at a virtual gala ceremony.
The top winning agencies include Supperstudio, Pearlfisher, Studio Maba and Backbone Branding. Some of the most common trends among this year’s winners were raising awareness about social issues, like mental health and diversity, focusing on environmental responsibility and communications, and reinvigorating traditional household products through design.
The most coveted award of the night, the Diamond award, was taken home by Moët Hennessy and Stranger & Stranger’s for its sustainable design of luxury Cuban rum, Eminente Reserva. The bottle is produced at the nearest glass manufacturer in Mexico, while the labels are made from cotton by-products of the textile industry and are affixed by hand in Cuba. With its crocodile-shaped logo and textured glass bottle, this rum was inspired by its native Cuban land that locals call “Isla del Cocodrilo” (Island of the crocodile).
The Platinum award winners included Rita Rivotti’s wine bottles aged and crafted by the ocean, 2Yolk’s design of vegan home care detergents and Supple Studio’s packaging design that aims to facilitate conversations around men’s mental health.
"From addressing today’s social agenda to carving out sustainable packaging alternatives, this year’s Pentawards entrants embody the future of the industry. I am always blown away by the calibre of our winners, and this year is no exception, particularly inspiring given the challenges we have all faced over the past couple of years,” says Adam Ryan, head of Pentawards.
This year’s Special Awards, which recognise achievements in packaging design by individuals and agencies, include Intertype Studio for ‘Best Newcomer of the Year,’ Iliada Olive Snacks by Mousegraphics for the ‘People’s Choice Awards,’ and Supperstudio for ‘Designer of the Year.’
